Everpresent, person-centered care is at the heart of the partnerships Howry Residential Services forms with the people we serve.

Our approach enhances individual outcomes by engaging in natural, gentle support and training. We maximize the quality of life for our clients by nurturing their self-determination, independent living skills, and socially responsible behavior in a community setting.

Howry’s Nurturing Approach

Kindness, respect, and mindfulness support the independent living of our clients and drive the care in our safe, community-based homes. Five core values illustrate Howry’s nurturing approach:

  1. Provide person-centered care.

  3. Slow down and listen.
  4. Have a sense of humor.
  5. Be kind and courteous.

At Howry, we recognize that real life is messy. Some days are joyful with a great story to tell, while others are full of difficulties. The Howry Residential Services Story

Care Centered on Compassion and Empowerment

“We teach by asking and learn by listening.” Susan Howry, Founder

Howry Residential Services started in 1995 as a family foster care provider. Owners Mark and Susan Howry started their first home in Eagan when they lived with a young man who faced challenges that prevented him from living independently.

In 1999, the Howrys wanted to expand their foster care model to more Minnesotans who wished to live in a community setting with support that allowed them to live as independently as possible. The Howrys moved out of their home and looked for housemates for their original client. It quickly became clear that many people were looking for housing based on the adult foster care model. Their home became the first Howry Residential Services home in 2000.

Fast forward to today, and Howry Residential Services operates 30 homes in five Twin Cities counties that serve more than 100 clients. We have intentionally maintained a “small company” feel throughout our growth, which has been possible in no small part because of the many long-term employees who are deeply committed to the people we serve. Clients and their families appreciate the high quality of care, open communication, and peace of mind they receive from the Howry team.

Family Testimonials

I am the parent of two adult children who are fortunate enough to be cared for by Howry Residential Services. I have the highest regard for Howry and their well-trained staff. The expertise, genuine compassion, and consistent quality care is unsurpassed. Howry staff listen, are flexible, and adapt quickly and thoroughly to the dynamic needs of my children. I love the ease with which some very difficult situations have been managed for both of my children, and communication is always prompt and appropriate. I have seen Howry from the inside out as my son was privileged to be hired by them and worked in direct care for several years. As an employee, my son had an excellent experience and the best training. I would be happy to speak with anyone considering working for or be cared for by Howry Residential Services.

Working with HRS is wonderful! The clients really do come first. HRS staff take the time to go the extra mile. For example, one program director holds anniversary parties for a client each year she resides in her HRS home. HRS developed a very creative staffing plan to allow a mom and her kids to stay in their own home as a family rather than having the mom live separately from her children. HRS management and line staff listen to input from team members. HRS staff work as a team with outside providers and among themselves. If there are any concerns, I know that they will be addressed and resolved. I trust HRS fully to ensure my clients’ needs will be met.
